Mathematics Placement
The Mathematics Placement Test helps determine the mathematics course that best matches your current preparation and academic program.
About the Mathematics Placement Test
The Mathematics Placement Test is available online through ALEKS. No advance registration is required. The assessment is designed to determine the appropriate mathematics course in which you should begin at Millersville University.
Complete the assessment honestly and independently. There is no benefit to inflating or deflating your abilities. Placement into a course that does not match your current preparation could delay your academic progress, affect your graduation timeline, or negatively affect your GPA.
Important: You may not retake the Mathematics Placement Test after you have taken a mathematics course at Millersville University. If you fail a mathematics course or do not earn the grade required for the course to serve as a prerequisite, you will need to repeat that course.
Who Must Complete the Test?
The Mathematics Placement Test is required for all undergraduate students unless Millersville University has received qualifying mathematics credit.
You may not need to complete the test if Millersville University has received:
- Transfer credit for an eligible 100-level or higher mathematics course.
- Qualifying Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate credit for an eligible 100-level or higher mathematics course.
Certain statistics courses may not satisfy the exemption requirement. Review your transfer-credit evaluation or academic record if you are unsure whether qualifying credit has been received.

Understanding Your Placement Results
Your ALEKS score determines the highest mathematics course for which you may be eligible to register through MAX. You may register for an appropriate course below your indicated placement.
Your placement score does not necessarily identify the exact course required for your major. You are strongly encouraged to speak with your academic advisor about the mathematics courses required for your academic program.
Education Majors
For Art Education, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Middle Level Education majors, your score will determine whether you need to take MATH 104: Fundamentals of Mathematics 1 with the supplemental course MATH 094.
- If you score 13 or higher, you do not need to take MATH 094.
- Middle Level Education students with a Mathematics concentration should aim for a score of 60 or higher.
If Your ALEKS Score Is Below 34
A score below 34 does not prevent you from registering for mathematics. Your next step depends on the mathematics course required by your academic program.
